About the event
Join an event hosted by Farm & Wilderness Conservation in collaboration with Karina Dailey from VT Natural Resource Council and Ron Rhodes from the Connecticut River Conservancy. We'll learn about dam removal initiatives throughout Vermont and New England and tour the site of a current dam removal and wetland restoration project. The first 30 minutes will involve a discussion of the ecological impacts of dam removal projects with professionals in the realm of dam removal and wetland restoration. Then, as an example of what dam removal projects can look like, we will hike to the site Farm & Wilderness Conservation's current project.
The dam removal site can be accessed via hike or by car. Participants will have the chance to choose which way they would like to get to the site when they register.
Trail Description: The hike to the wetland restoration site is short but moderately steep with no switch backs. Terrain is not difficult. Short but steady climb. 2 miles out and back.
Drive Description: Participants will park and meet up with the rest of the group, particpate in the discussion at the beginning of the event, and then get into a van and ride to the dam removal site. The ride is 15 minutes and the short walk to the dam removal site from the van is 10 minutes.
Parking: Logistics and parking information will be provided after registration.
What to Bring: Come prepared with shoes to walk in, hats, long sleeves and pants, and bug/tick repellent if you wish. If you are hiking to the site, be sure to bring any supplies that will make your hike more comfortable such as poles and sturdy shoes. Please also bring plenty of water. Snacks provided!
Other info: This event is free and open all ages, children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Preregistration is required for all participants and each participant needs to register individually so F&W can accurately plan how many folks to expect. As per F&W policy, no dogs or pets please. We may encounter wildlife and it will be best for everyone involved if pets stay at home. Upon arrival, participants will be asked to sign an Outdoor Program Waiver.
